Philippines sculptor Ramon Orlina is not only into glass, he’s also into ‘Beetles.’ When he is not crafting the marvels from breakable glass that he’s world-famous for, he’s restoring tired and old Volkswagen Beetles, a hobby that may be incomprehensible to the Toyota generation but is really perfectly sound to vintage-car collectors

His first restoration work is a stretched Beetle; stretched, like a limousine. Orlina said his approach was not to restore the Beetle to its original condition but to create the only “Limousine Bug” in the world.

Orlina explained the car was cut in half and stretched by more than one meter. Two additional doors were incorporated into the limo for rear passenger entry. Also installed was a glass partition door behind the driver and front passenger seats “should there be a need for more privacy,” the artist said. To move and carry that entire added load, the car’s chassis has been stiffened with a ladder-type box frame and the boxer-type 4 cylinder engine bored to 1800cc for more horsepower.

The limo Beetle is painted white with leather-trimmed beige interiors. The rear cabin can sit four people because of the extra seat – there are two bench seats facing each other. Aside from the dual air-conditioning system, another added amenity is a Philips DVD player hooked up to an all-Blaupunkt surround-sound system. The 10-inch monitor is hidden behind the backrest of the bench seat facing the rear seats; the back can be folded to reveal the monitor.
